Quote from Peskov: "You know that any war ends in peace, one way or another. But for us, there is no alternative to achieving our goals."

Details: Peskov said that as soon as these goals "are achieved in one way or another", the war will be over.

Background:

  • Earlier, Zelenskyy said in an interview with ABC News that Russia's war against Ukraine is "closer to the end" than many people think and called on allies to strengthen Ukrainian forces.
  • Putin stated in June that he was "ready for peace talks", but for that to happen, Ukraine has to withdraw its troops from all the Russian-occupied regions that the Kremlin considers to be Russian territory.
  • On 22 September, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy began his visit to the US, where he intends to present Ukraineʼs Victory Plan to President Joe Biden and other leaders of partner countries.
  • Zelenskyy is expected to present a detailed version of the plan to Biden during their meeting in Washington on 26 September.
  • Earlier, Zelenskyy said that the Victory Plan is designed for decisions to be made in October-December 2024.
  • On the eve of his visit to the US, Zelenskyy said the possibility of US President Joe Biden not backing Ukraine’s Victory Plan was "a horrible thought", because that would lead to a very long war with a huge number of casualties.
