US will not change its policy on Ukraine striking deep into Russian territory yet – White House
The United States does not plan to announce any changes to its policy on Ukraine’s use of long-range missiles on Friday.
Source: John Kirby, National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the White House, writes Reuters, as reported by European Pravda
Details: Kirby advised against expecting major announcements on the issue during US President Joe Biden's meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Washington.
Quote: "There is no change to our view on the provision of long range strike capabilities for Ukraine to use inside of Russia. I would not expect any major announcement in that regard," he said.
CLARIFIED: The advisor’s statement referred specifically to changes after Biden’s meeting with Starmer on Friday, 13 September.
In addition, the White House official stated that the US was serious about Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin's threat that if Ukraine launched Western-made long-range missiles into Russia, he would consider the West to be directly involved in the war.
"This is not rhetoric that we haven't heard from him before," Kirby said, adding that the United States was taking those comments seriously.
Background:
- On 12 September, Putin stressed that any move by the West to allow Kyiv to use such long-range weapons against targets in Russia would draw NATO into the war with Russia, a sharp escalation of his rhetoric on the war.
- UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer stressed that Russia is the aggressor and Ukraine has the right to defend itself, responding to Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s remarks.
- At a briefing on Friday 13 September, EU foreign policy spokesperson Peter Stano stated that Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin’s threats to consider NATO and European countries as participants in the war if Western long-range missiles are used on Russian territory will not affect the EU's position on backing Ukraine.
