White House on Russia's large-scale attack on Ukraine: Classic move in Putin's strategy
The White House National Security Council's Strategic Communications Coordinator John Kirby emphasised at an online briefing on Monday, 26 August, that the United States will continue to help Ukraine strengthen its air defence and energy system after Russia's large-scale attack on Ukraine, and called the attack a "classic move in the strategy" of Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin.

Details: Kirby said that the Russians are targeting energy infrastructure, especially since it's going to get colder soon and the people of Ukraine will need heat.
According to Kirby, the latest Russian attack is a classic move in Vladimir Putin's strategy.
The White House official added that the United States is focused on further strengthening Ukrainian air defence. The government is focused on finding interceptors and systems not only from the United States, but also from allies and partners, Kirby said, recalling the delivery of five Patriot air defence systems that was announced at the NATO summit.
He also said that the United States is working with Ukraine to strengthen its energy infrastructure.
The spokesperson said that although that's a big part of this process, this is not just about protecting certain locations, and elaborated that the US needs to guarantee that Ukraine has a safety margin, a reserve, and supply chains, so that the country’s energy infrastructure continues to operate even if it suffers attacks.
Background:
- On 26 August Russia launched 236 aerial weapons on Ukraine. Ukraine's air defence downed 102 missiles and 99 attack drones.
- The large-scale Russian attack was followed by EU diplomat Josep Borrell once again calling for the lifting of all existing restrictions on Ukraine's use of Western weapons to strike Russian military targets.
