Ukrainian fencers take 4th place at World Championships
Ukrainian fencers lost two key World Fencing Championships matches on 30 July, taking fourth place. This is the Ukrainian fencing team’s best ever result at the championships.

Details: Ukraine's women's sabre fencing team has finished competing at the World Championships in Milan, Italy.
The Ukrainians stopped one step short of a medal, taking fourth place.
The team sabre competition closes the 2023 World Championships program for the Ukrainian national team. In all other weapons, the Ukrainians did not reach the semifinals: the best result at the tournament was the quarterfinals in women's epee.
The women's sabre team began their World Championships on Saturday, July 29, winning two rounds. First, the Ukrainians defeated Uzbekistan 45:27, and then Italy 45:33, reaching the quarterfinals.
In the quarterfinals, the Ukrainians played against the US team. A point won by Olha Harlan was decisive, with the final score of 45:44.
In the semifinals, Ukraine lost to France 32:45.
In the bronze medal round, Ukraine lost against South Korea, with the same score as in the France match.
Background:
- On 27 July, Ukrainian fencer Olha Kharlan was disqualified from the World Fencing Championships in Milan for not showing respect for her Russian opponent after a victory in a match. Kharlan defeated Anna Smirnova, a Russian, and refused to shake her hand afterwards.
- Kharlan was disqualified for 60 days.
- The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has expressed its solidarity with Ukrainian athletes and called on international federations to be sensitive to competitions between Ukrainian and Russian neutral athletes.
- Olha Kharlan has been automatically allowed to compete in the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
