Quote: "We had a frank discussion on Leopards 2. To be continued.

I also thanked the German Government and the German people for their military assistance to Ukraine and hospitality at the eighth Ramstein [meeting – ed.]."

The Ministry of Defence of Germany reported that German Defence Minister Pistorius held "extensive negotiations" with Reznikov at the end of the Ramstein meeting.

"Germany will continue to keep direct contact with Kyiv in order to further supply Ukraine with targeted support in its fight against the Russian aggression," the Ministry of Defence of Germany stated.

Background:

  • Boris Pistorius, Minister of Defence of Germany, stated that western allies are yet to reach an agreement concerning supplying Ukraine with main combat tanks Leopard 2 at the Ramstein format meeting, but he also told his Ministry to get prepared because it may "happen one day".
  • A protest against the reluctance of the Olaf Scholz administration to supply Ukraine with the Leopard 2 tanks is taking place in Berlin at the moment.
  • Mateusz Morawiecki, Prime Minister of Poland, hinted that Warsaw can supply Ukraine with a unit of German-made tanks without Berlin’s permission if its approval takes too long.
  • Earlier, the media reported that Olaf Scholz, Chancellor of Germany, made a condition concerning the supply of the Leopard 2 German tanks in a phone call with Joe Biden, the President of the USA. Germany will supply Ukraine with these tanks, if the USA also makes a decision about supplying it with its Abrams tanks.
