16 perished defenders of Mariupol brought to Kyiv

The bodies of 16 more fallen soldiers defending Mariupol were delivered to Kyiv.

Details: It is reported that now the patronage service, together with the police, morgue workers and forensic experts and criminologists are running an examination and registration of bodies.
The service added that the families of fallen heroes would be promptly informed about the detection of DNA matches.
Background:
- Earlier, several stages of exchange of deceased servicemen have already taken place.
- Russian troops blocked Mariupol on 1 March. Since the end of April, the defenders of Mariupol have been blocked at the Azovstal plant: these are representatives of the National Guard Regiment Azov, Marines, border guards, policemen.
- The exit of the defenders of Mariupol to the territory controlled by the Russians took place on 16-20 May. According to the Russian side, 2,439 fighters left the dungeons of Azovstal. Representatives of the Red Cross registered Ukrainian defenders as prisoners of war.
- The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine stated that the Mariupol garrison completed a combat mission and the commanders were given the order to save the lives of personnel. The Defence Ministry of Ukraine explained that there was no other escape option for defenders from Azovstal, except of going out to Russians.
On 2 June, Ukraine and Russia held the first exchange of bodies of dead soldiers according to the formula "160 by 160" allegedly; there were bodies of at least 52 soldiers of the Azov Regiment among them. On 8 June, 50 more fallen heroes were returned, 37 of whom were the defenders of Azovstal.
