National Security and Defence Council expects increase in shelling on 8-9 May: they ask people not to ignore air-raid sirens

Analysts at the National Security and Defence Council urge Ukrainians not to ignore air-raid sirens on 8-9 May because of the increased risk of shelling.

Quote: "The Centre for Countering Disinformation at the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine calls for people to be especially attentive to air-raid sirens on the eve of and during 8-9 May. 

"Since Russian troops cannot boast of significant achievements at the front before Victory Day (9 May), the risk of massive shelling of Ukrainian cities these days is increasing."

Details: The authorities are urging citizens to be careful and follow curfew rules on those days.

  • Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that on 9 May, an official delegation will not be sent to Mariupol, because [it’s not the time] "for a broad celebration."
  • The mayor of Kharkiv Ihor Terekhov asked citizens not to visit memorial sites on Victory Day due to the threat of shelling and provocations.
  • Ivano-Frankivsk Mayor Ruslan Martsinkiv has urged residents to leave the city on 7-10 May due to the threat of Russian air strikes.
  • Militants of unrecognised Russian formations in Donbas have cancelled so-called "victory parades" in Donetsk and Luhansk.
  • No leaders of other countries, not even the self-proclaimed President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, are expected in Moscow on Victory Day.
