Nayyem: GPU and SBU Preparing to Escalate Attack on NABU
The Prosecutor General’s Office (GPU) and the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) are going to ramp up pressure against the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU), Petro Poroshenko Bloc MP Mustafa Nayyem commented on his Facebook page.
According to Nayyem, the GPU and SBU are preparing a number of criminal cases against NABU employees, including mid-level managers. "They will accuse them of unlawful activities, discredit them and take all possible measures to prevent establishment of the Anti-Corruption Court," he informed.
Nayyem also noted that the Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko was silent for almost a week about the illegal detention of two NABU employees by the GPU and "torturing them to solicit evidence."
"I do hope that people who organized it don’t understand what could be the outcome. The NABU is the only law enforcement authority in the country the management of which has no political affiliations. Politicians do everything they can to hinder its efficient operation. This is the war of the elites for the money and status quo they illegally obtained," he added.
"There is no way around street democracy," Nayyem said as he called on people to come on Wednesday, August 17, at 10 a.m. to the GPU building to stand up for NABU.
The conflict between the two agencies escalated on Friday, August 12, when GPU officers detained NABU detectives who were conducting court-ordered surveillance of GPU prosecutor Dmytro Sus. On August 15, the SBU joined the attack against NABU, accusing one of its employees of alleged corruption as she worked as a trainer three times.
NABU Chief Artem Sytnyk flared up over this accusation and claimed that this employee did not violate any law, because public servants are permitted to provide training sessions.
