If former Party of Regions MP Volodymyr Medianyk cooperates with the investigation, he may be released from detention in October, Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko said during a press briefing in Kyiv on Wednesday, August 10.

Medianyk was arrested in the ‘separatism case’, involving former Party of Regions parliamentary leader Oleksandr Yefremov. Lutsenko is hoping that the investigation in the case will be finished by the end of the year.

"What is special about Medianyk, during the separatism-related events in Luhansk and the capturing of the SBU and oblast administration buildings by the Russian terrorists, is that he was an intermediary between the Ukrainian side and the separatists and terrorists. This means, at that point he was playing a positive role for the Ukrainian state," Lutsenko said.

"If he cooperates with the investigation, it is possible that his pretrial detention will not be prolonged for another two months. But if he sticks to the tactics imposed by Yefremov’s lawyer, which is to deny everything and not release any information, he will go to court accused of the heaviest crimes possible for a citizen of Ukraine, just like Yefremov," he added.

Volodymyr Medianyk was arrested on August 6 on charges of violation of the territorial integrity of Ukraine.
