The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) has responded to the execution of Ukrainian soldiers, noting that Russian commanders are condoning these executions, which is a clear violation of international law.

Details: Russian troops have recently executed more Ukrainian prisoners of war on the battlefield.

A video with geolocation data posted on 22 December shows Russian troops executing five Ukrainian prisoners of war on the border of Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia oblasts in Blahodatne (south of Velyka Novosilka).

ISW assesses that Russian commanders are either complacent or conniving with their subordinates in participating in the executions of prisoners of war, in clear violation of international law.

Background:

  • In October, ISW pointed to an increase in executions of Ukrainian prisoners of war which are condoned and encouraged by Russian commanders.
  • Ukraine's Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets reported that the number of cases of executions of Ukrainian soldiers by the Russians in 2024 was nearly double that of the preceding two years of the war.
