UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy has called on China to investigate reports suggesting that it supplied weapons to Russia for use in the war against Ukraine, emphasising that this could harm China's relations with Europe.

Details: Lammy's statement comes just after the US took the decision to impose sanctions on Chinese companies that produce weapons for Russia.

During a visit to China, Lammy told Foreign Minister Wang Yi that the UK and China have a "shared interest in European peace and ending the war" in Ukraine.

The foreign secretary noted that Chinese military supplies to Russia risk "damaging China's relationships with Europe whilst helping to sustain Russia's war" against Ukraine.

Background:

  • The United States has repeatedly warned China against supporting the Russian defence industry and has imposed hundreds of sanctions aimed at curbing Moscow's ability to use certain technologies for military purposes.
  • In September, US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell said China was directly assisting the Russian war machine by supporting its efforts to wage war against Ukraine.
