Details: It is noted that the Russians are continuing to use chemical munitions against the Ukrainian military, including K-51s and RG-VOs, which are anti-riot agents and are prohibited for use as weapons of war. In addition, most of the recorded cases involve munitions containing hazardous chemicals of unspecified type. In August alone, 447 such cases were recorded.

Ukraine's defence forces emphasise that Russia is grossly violating the rules of warfare, ignoring the norms and obligations under the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and on their Destruction.

Background:

  • In April 2024, the Command of Ukraine's Support Forces stated that the use of chemical agents by Russian troops during hostilities against the Ukrainian defence forces had become systematic. Between February 2023 and March 2024, 1,412 cases of the use of chemical munitions by Russian troops were recorded.
  • The press service for the command told Ukrainska Pravda that 4,035 cases of the use of chemical munitions by the Russian Armed Forces units have been recorded since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion (data since 15 February 2023). The data on Russia's use of these weapons from 24 February 2022 to February 2023 is not available to the general public, added Maksym Kravchuk, spokesman for the Support Forces Command.
