President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says he received "very direct information" from US presidential candidate Donald Trump about his support for Ukraine.

Quote: "I've got from Donald Trump very direct information that he will be on our side, that he will support Ukraine. There are so many details, I think, which he was very interested to hear."

Details: When asked by a journalist if Trump had asked him anything, Zelenskyy said: "Yes, of course, a lot."

Among the questions Trump asked him, the Ukrainian president named the following: "What is the real current situation on the battlefield?", "How do you see the support from the United States?" and "Why do you think Putin began this invasion?".

Zelenskyy noted that Trump did not mention his visit to Pennsylvania, which had prompted US House Speaker Mike Johnson to demand that Zelenskyy recall Ukraine's ambassador to the US, Oksana Markarova.

Asked if he had plans to recall Markarova after Johnson's demand, Zelenskyy said: "I am the president of Ukraine and I can discuss our ambassadors only with the speaker [of the parliament] of my country. That's the Constitution. I can't discuss this with Speaker Johnson, with all due respect."

Background:

  • After his meeting with Zelensky, Trump stated that he supports a "fair" peace for Ukraine, but did not say which solution to end the war between Russia and Ukraine would be regarded as such.
  • Right before the meeting, Donald Trump praised the way Volodymyr Zelenskyy acted during the attempt to impeach Trump in 2019 and said they had a "great relationship". However, he immediately noted the same about his relationship with Russian ruler Vladimir Putin and reiterated his confidence that he could quickly stop the war if elected president.
  • Following a meeting with Zelenskyy in New York, Trump stated that if he loses the election, the war in Ukraine will escalate into the third World War.
  • On Wednesday, 25 September, Mike Johnson, Speaker of the US House of Representatives, posted a letter to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy containing a categorical demand to dismiss Ukraine’s Ambassador to the US. He also refused to meet Zelenskyy during his visit.
