Details: On Thursday, US Senate representatives from both the Democratic and Republican parties persisted in their efforts to reach a consensus on positions that would authorise further aid to Israel and Ukraine and fortify border security.
"We're making progress and the White House is engaged, which is good. Everything's encouraging," Senator John Thune, the second-ranking Republican in the Senate, told reporters.
The White House's request for supplemental funding, which involves providing Ukraine with military and macrofinancial assistance worth a total of approximately US$61 billion, has been stuck in the US Congress for more than two months.
Any agreement in the Senate, which the Democrats control with a majority of 51 votes, would also need to win approval from the US House of Representatives, where the Republicans have a 221-213 majority.
Lawmakers in Congress, the lower house, were unable to pass funding before Christmas because they left Washington on Thursday to start their holiday recess.
