Details: During the Senate vote on the National Defence Authorisation Act, 68 senators voted in favour and 11 against, with significant support from both Democrats and Republicans.

After the Senate's approval, the Act will be sent to the House of Representatives, which could pass it by the end of this week.

Reuters noted that President Joe Biden "strongly supports" the bill and is expected to sign it as a law.

The bill includes provisions for US$300 million in funding for the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative.

This amount is miniscule compared to the US$61 billion in aid for Ukraine included in President Biden's supplemental funding package.

Background:

  • Last year, the US Senate approved a record US$858 billion defence budget for the next year, which includes funds for military assistance to Ukraine.
