Quote: "The 27-nation bloc has so far trained 34,000 Ukrainian personnel for the front line as Kyiv seeks to fight back Russia's invading forces. That makes the EU the biggest provider of training for Ukraine's military."
Details: Previously, €61 million had been allocated from the European Peace Fund for these purposes.
Now, EU countries have decided to increase this amount to €255 million, the European Commission says. The number of soldiers who will have undergone training should soon reach 40,000.
Background: The announcement of additional funds for the training of Ukrainian soldiers has been made as the EU is trying to put together a larger package of long-term support for Ukraine.
However, Hungary, Russia’s closest ally in the EU, has threatened to halt any talks at an upcoming summit in December concerning further supplies of military and financial aid for Ukraine or the start of Ukraine’s NATO accession talks.
