Quote: "Even on New Year’s Eve, Russia was focused solely on inflicting pain on Ukraine, launching 111 attack drones against our cities. Thanks to our air defence systems, mobile fire teams and electronic warfare units, most of them were intercepted. Sadly, one person was killed. My deepest condolences to their family and loved ones. There are also reports of casualties and damage. All emergency services are actively responding."
Details: Zelenskyy expressed heartfelt gratitude to all those who, regardless of the circumstances, protect Ukraine and its people every day and night – whether on duty, at work, or in service: the military, rescue teams, emergency services and medical personnel.
Background:
- Wreckage from a Russian drone fell on a residential building in Kyiv’s Pecherskyi district on the morning of 1 January, partially destroying the top two floors and causing a fire. Rescue workers have recovered the body of a woman from under the rubble, and seven more people were reported to have sustained injuries.
- Ukraine’s Air Force reported that the Russians bombarded Ukraine with 111 Shahed attack drones and other types of UAVs on the night of 31 December-1 January. Ukrainian air defence forces destroyed 63 drones, while 46 more failed to reach their targets.
