Luxembourg opposes Ukraine's NATO membership – media

Xavier Bettel, Luxembourg's foreign minister, has spoken out against Ukraine's membership in NATO.

Details: The minister's remarks were made during a meeting of NATO foreign ministers on 3 December in Brussels. Bettel stressed that he does not support the idea of Ukraine's membership in the Alliance, explaining his position by the risk of immediate new conflicts.
Bettel said that he believed NATO membership would bring tensions again.
At the same time, Bettel expressed support for Ukraine's prospects of becoming a member of the European Union.
Background:
- On the evening of 3 December, the media reported that Germany and the United States are not yet ready to support an official invitation to Ukraine to join NATO. Slovakia and Hungary also oppose Ukraine's invitation.
- On 3 November, the NATO-Ukraine Council meets in Brussels. Earlier, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said for the first time that Ukraine could join NATO with Article 5 partially in force, but this idea has not yet been detailed.
- On 28 November, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called on his NATO counterparts to invite Ukraine to join the Alliance: "I urge you to approve the decision to invite Ukraine to join the Alliance as one of the outcomes of the NATO foreign ministers’ meeting on 3-4 December 2024," the statement said.
- On the day of the NATO ministerial meeting, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine issued an official position on possible security guarantees that could be considered as a deterrent against Russian aggression. The document emphasises that Ukraine rejects any formats other than NATO membership.
