Russian forces attack Kyiv: explosions rock city, air defences engaged
A series of powerful explosions shook Kyiv at 07:00 on 20 December after an air-raid warning was issued in the city. Ukraine's Air Force reported detecting a high-speed target flying towards Kyiv.

Details: Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko noted that air defence units were responding to the threat and urged residents to take shelter.
Later, the Air Force reported detecting two more high-speed aerial targets heading from Chernihiv Oblast towards Kyiv, followed by additional explosions.
Air defences are also engaged in Kyiv Oblast, as reported by the Kyiv Oblast Military Administration.
At 07:19, the Air Force reported a ballistic missile was heading north towards the capital.
Background: At around 06:30, the Air Force reported that a MiG-31K, a carrier of the Kinzhal hypersonic missile, had taken off from Russia. An air-raid warning was subsequently issued across Ukraine.
