Details: According to preliminary information, the Ukrainian soldier was most likely injured while carrying out a combat mission in the Bakhmut district. The Russians eventually took over the building in which he was stationed, taking him prisoner.

They shot the unarmed Ukrainian soldier on the ground. According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, this occurred at around 10:00 on 6 September 2024, near the Phenol Plant in the village of New-York.

Quote: "Killing prisoners of war is a clear violation of the Geneva Conventions and constitutes a serious international crime.

Under the procedural supervision of the Donetsk Oblast Prosecutor's Office, a pre-trial inquiry was begun in criminal proceedings on the fact of violation of the rules and customs of war, combined with intentional murder."

Background: The Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine has said that the number of executions of Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) by the Russians has increased over the past year. Prosecutor General Andrii Kostin has emphasised that these crimes are not separate incidents, but Russia’s deliberate policy.
