Sources said that the second batch of missiles from Spain arrived in Ukraine last Friday, 21 June, in addition to the first batch that was delivered at the end of April.

The missiles for the Patriot are part of a "significant shipment" expected to take place in June this year, as reported by Defence Minister Margarita Robles on 25 May during a meeting of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group, also known as the Ramstein format.

Background:

  • Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy mentioned an agreement with Spain regarding assistance in strengthening air defence, but he did not disclose the details until all deliveries were approved.
  • Prior to that, there were media reports that Spain would send Patriot air defence missiles and Leopard 2A4 tanks to Ukraine as part of a previously announced aid package.
  • Meanwhile, Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the Spanish Prime Minister signed a bilateral security agreement, according to which Spain will provide €1 billion in military aid to Ukraine in 2024.
