Ukrainian Parliament calls on world governments and parliaments to condemn and oppose Putin's sham elections in occupied territories

The Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian Parliament) has appealed to governments and parliaments of other countries and international organisations to condemn the so-called presidential "elections" of the Russian Federation in the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine.

Details: 282 MPs voted in favour of the relevant resolution.

The Rada also calls for countering Russia's attempts to attract international observers to legitimise the presidential "elections" in the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine.

The Ukrainian parliament, in addition, calls for increasing sanctions pressure against officials and citizens of the Russian Federation involved in organising such sham elections.

Background:

  • Despite the hostilities, the Russian authorities are going to hold presidential "elections" in March 2024 in the occupied Ukrainian territories.
  • The wife of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, Yulia, has called on the European Union not to recognise the Russian presidential election, which is due to take place on 15-17 March.
