Quote from CNN: "Wednesday’s unexpected decision comes as a similar anti-Trump challenge from Colorado is pending before the US Supreme Court, which is widely expected to reject arguments that Trump is barred from office."

County Circuit Judge Cook Tracie Porter largely based her decision on the previous conclusion of the Colorado Supreme Court, describing the Colorado court"s rationale compelling."

"The court also realises the magnitude of this decision and its impact on the upcoming primary Illinois elections," Porter wrote. "The Illinois State Board of Election shall remove Donald J. Trump from the ballot for the General Primary Election on 19 March 2024, or cause any votes cast for him to be suppressed."

Illinois becomes the third state to remove Trump from the election ballots, following Colorado and Maine. However, these decisions have been temporarily suspended pending the appeal in the Colorado case before the US Supreme Court.

Background

  • Earlier, the Republican Party of Colorado appealed to the US Supreme Court after the Colorado Supreme Court disqualified Trump from participating in the party's primary elections in the state.
  • Additionally, the Supreme Court of Michigan dismissed a lawsuit seeking to prohibit former US President Donald Trump from participating in the primaries.
