Romanian protesters block Ukrainian lorries at another checkpoint – photo
The transit of Ukrainian lorries through the Diakove border checkpoint has been hindered by the erection of a blockade on the Romanian side.
Source: Andrii Demchenko, spokesman for the State Border Guard Service, in a comment to Ukrainska Pravda
Details: Demchenko stated that on 18 January, the Romanian Border Police received word that the Halmeu checkpoint, on the opposite side of the border from the Ukrainian Diakove checkpoint in Zakarpattia Oblast, had been blocked.
The protestors, who are blocking the passage of lorries, represent companies in the road haulage and agricultural sectors. At 10:30, they parked large agricultural vehicles on the road in an effort to impede traffic.
Quote: "The reasons and estimated duration of such actions have not been reported.
Ukrainian border guards are coordinating with their Romanian counterparts regarding further clearance operations for trucks.
Available information indicates that significant queues of freight vehicles in the direction of Ukraine are not currently observed on Romanian territory.
Additionally, an YeCherha (E-Queue), [the Ukrainian online service for booking a place to cross the border by truck] is working for freight vehicles exiting Ukraine at the Diakove checkpoint, with approximately 600 vehicles registered.
The freight vehicle traffic from Ukraine to Romania has been temporarily suspended by the Romanian side to prevent the blockade of passage for other categories of transport. Currently, passage is allowed for trucks heading to the territory of Ukraine. However, traffic disruptions may occur in both directions.
The passage of passenger cars and buses is proceeding in the usual mode."
Background: The blocking of traffic for lorries in Romania on the border with Ukraine also continues in the direction of two more checkpoints – Siret-Porubne and Vicovu de Sus-Krasnoilsk.
