Details: Biden also said that he did not consider the situation on the United States' southern border a crisis but announced "significant changes" regarding the border.

"I've been pushing them – my Republican colleagues – since I took office. I believe we have to make major changes on the border. I've been pushing for that. I am ready to make significant changes at the border. And we have been negotiating for the last five weeks, so I hope we can achieve that," the US president said.

Background:

  • In December 2023, representatives of the US Republican Party blocked a bill to allocate billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine, including Israel, in an attempt to link it to the strengthening of its southern borders.
  • On 12 January, it became known that Democrats had rejected US House Speaker Michael Johnson's demands to strengthen the border with Mexico in exchange for assistance to Ukraine.
  • On 12 January, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he is more confident now that the United States will provide military and financial assistance to Ukraine. "I look at it with more positivity than in December. I think we will also push for a result," Zelenskyy said.
