Ukraine’s Defence Intelligence has called the discovery of bugging devices in the office of Commander-in-Chief Valerii Zaluzhnyi a "resonant event".

Quote: "This is a significant incident, and counterintelligence agencies, primarily the SSU [Security Service of Ukraine – ed.], must investigate and establish the truth in this situation.

Background:

  • On 17 December, Ukrainska Pravda sources reported that bugging devices had been found in the offices of Valerii Zaluzhnyi and some of his staff. The rooms were to have been the new office of the commander-in-chief, and were being inspected prior to his moving in.
  • The Security Service of Ukraine stated that a technical device, which was not in working order, had been found in one of the potential locations for Valerii Zaluzhnyi’s office. Law enforcement officers have opened a criminal investigation.
  • Zaluzhnyi himself does not consider the discovery of bugging devices in his office to be pressure on him and does not think state secrets could have been discussed in the office.
