Kuleba on results of meeting with Hungarian Foreign Minister: We've had a sincere conversation

Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has spoken about the results of his meeting with Hungarian counterpart Péter Szijjártó.

Details: The Ukrainian Foreign Minister said he had an hour-long "sincere conversation" with Szijjártó.

Quote: "We have known each other for a long time, although this is the first time since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion that we’ve sat down and had a thorough conversation. We answered each other's questions honestly. Ukraine and Hungary have some questions for each other," Kuleba said.

As the minister said, the key topic of the meeting was the upcoming decision of the European Council to open negotiations on Ukraine's membership in the EU.

Quote: "I understand that everyone is waiting for an answer [on the issue of Ukraine’s EU accession, which is being blocked by Hungary – ed.]: yes or no? Give us some time. I'm going to report to President Zelenskyy right now. Péter will report to his prime minister (Viktor Orbán – Ed.). In the meantime, I want to give one signal. I have made it clear: Péter, we have a common future in Europe. We have to get there as soon as possible. Together," Kuleba concluded.

Contacts between Kyiv and Budapest have intensified ahead of the European Council meeting on 14-15 December, where the decision to open accession talks with Ukraine and approve macro-financial assistance is to be considered.

Among other things, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Viktor Orbán, Hungarian Prime Minister, on Sunday at the inauguration of the Argentinian president. And last week, Andrii Yermak, Head of the President's Office, spoke to Szijjártó by phone.

However, after these talks, Orbán called the Spanish presidency of the EU Council and persuaded them not to raise the issue of opening negotiations with Ukraine at the summit.
