Details: The German chancellor said that he "never expected that everything would change from one day to the next". Scholz added that the Ukrainian defence forces had been planning the operations "in a very targeted way".

In addition, Scholz reiterated that Ukraine will not be able to join NATO as long as the war continues, as the criteria for membership include "no open border conflicts"

The chancellor emphasised the importance of "great practical support for Ukraine", which "will continue".

Scholz said that Germany has created the conditions to support Ukraine for a long time.

"Many countries will be able to provide aid for one, two, three, and if need be, more years, because we don't know how long the military conflict will last," he added.
