Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy believes that Russia might attack Ukraine’s gas transportation system (GTS) and demand that European countries launch Nord Stream 2.

Quote from Zelenskyy: "They will attack Ukraine's GTS. In order to avoid blame, [Russia] will commit a terrorist attack on their [own] territory. They don't care what gets blown up. They will accuse us in order to [justify hitting] our GTS.

[Putin] will tell Europe that there is no way [to supply gas], [and that Europe therefore needs] to launch Nord Stream 2, otherwise Europe will be left without gas, all because of Ukraine."

Details: Zelenskyy added that if Russia continues to undermine Europe's energy system, European countries will have to firmly stand by the following position: "We will not launch Nord Stream 2 and we will not lift sanctions."

Meanwhile, Dmitry Peskov, Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation, said, in response to Zelenskyy's comment about the possibility of Russia striking Ukraine’s gas transportation system: "We are not in the habit of shooting ourselves in the foot."

Background: During his speech before members of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on 13 October, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for such sanctions against the Russian Federation, which will result in loss of any profits for gas and oil sold by Russia.
