Russia is looking for weaknesses in Ukraine's defence in the area around the Siverskyi Donets River in eastern Ukraine and is persisting in its attempts to cross the river.
Source: Ministry of Defence spokesman Oleksandr Motuzianyk on the air of the 24-hour national newscast
Quote from Motuzianyk: "As of now, they (the Russians - ed.) are not abandoning their attempts (to cross the Siverskyi Donets - ed.). They are looking for weaknesses in our defence, which runs along the right bank of the river. They are looking for our artillery locations and trying to crush them."
Details: Motuzianyk noted that in general, crossing a water obstacle is a very difficult operation.
Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk, located on opposite banks of the Siverskyi Donets River, are the last major cities in Luhansk Oblast that are controlled by Ukraine.
Background:
- The battle for Sievierodonetsk is currently underway.
- On 5 June, Serhii Haidai, the head of the Luhansk Oblast Administration, said that the Armed Forces had repulsed the aggressor in the city and controlled exactly half of Severodonetsk.
- In May, it was reported that paratroopers of the 80th Separate Air Assault Brigade had thwarted attempts by the Russian occupiers to cross the Siverskyi Donets River nine times. The defenders destroyed the invader’s pontoons and equipment.
