The two leaders signed a joint declaration and held a press conference to discuss deepening ties between China and Russia and cooperation in trade and major foreign policy issues.

In particular, they discussed the Russian-Ukrainian war, which China refers to as a "crisis".

Without giving any details of next steps, Xi Jinping said that China and Russia insist on a "political solution" to the war in Ukraine, while Putin expressed appreciation for China's "efforts to resolve the Ukrainian crisis".

Putin also said he would brief Xi on the situation on the battlefield.

Xi's statement comes amid Western concerns that China is strengthening Russia's economy and supplying arms components for the war against Ukraine.

Putin said on Thursday 16 May that the closed military-political partnership in the Asia-Pacific region was "harmful".

Trade between China and Russia is booming. China has become a major export market for energy supplies that keep money flowing into the Kremlin's coffers.

Xi and Putin and their delegations held about 45 minutes of talks. At the press conference, Putin said that the discussions were "warm and friendly", demonstrating the importance of the relationship between the two countries.

The Russian leader said that both countries are working to create a "multipolar world" and that many of their approaches to global and regional issues are similar.
