At the same time, US Vice President Kamala Harris, in a conversation with Israeli President Isaac Herzog on Tuesday, emphasised the importance of protecting the lives of civilians in the Gaza Strip and respecting international humanitarian law.

Background:

  • Previously, the United States rejected Iran's claims that US officials had sent messages to Tehran to seek a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, where Israel is conducting a military operation against the Hamas militant group.
  • Earlier, the US Secretary of State disagreed with calls by Jordan and Egypt to persuade Israel to cease fire in the Gaza Strip.
  • During his visit to Israel, Blinken said that the US recognises Israel's full right to defend itself, but how it does so matters and civilians in Gaza must be protected.
  • Media reports indicated that the United States expects Israel to change its tactics against Hamas in the coming days, reducing the scale of air attacks and focusing on tactical ground operations.
