Wagner mercenaries remain in Belarus – Belaruski Hajun

The Belaruski Hajun monitoring group currently does not see Wagner Group mercenaries withdrawing from the territory of their base in Belarus.

Source: Belaruski Hajun, a Belarusian Telegram channel monitoring military activity on the territory of the Republic of Belarus

Quote: "At the moment, the Belaruski Hajun monitoring group does not record a withdrawal of mercenary forces from their main base in Belarus – the camp in the settlement of Ceľ, Asipovičy district. At the same time, yesterday evening [23 August – ed.], the Internet was recorded to have been operating with interruptions near the camp."

Details: The satellite images from 15 August indicate a slight increase in the number of equipment in the field camp in the village of Ceľ. About 35 tents out of almost 300 were dismantled in the camp from 28 July to 15 August.

In general, the monitoring group reports that the situation on the territory of the camp is not static and is constantly changing.

On the evening of 23 August, Yevgeny Prigozhin, leader of the Wagner Group, as well as a number of key figures of the private military company, died in a plane crash.

Immediately after the news of Prigozhin's death, a theory began to spread supposing that the death of the leadership of the Wagner Group can lead to a dismembering of the private military company, and the mercenaries withdrawing from Belarus.

Background:

  • On the evening of 23 August, a small plane crashed in Russian Tver Oblast, and the Russians claimed that Yevgeny Prigozhin, leader of the Wagner Group, was on board.
  • The Grey Zone Telegram channel, which is close to the Wagner Group, claimed that Yevgeny Prigozhin's plane had been shot down by Russian air defence fire. It was also shared that a terrorist attack on board is being considered as a line of enquiry regarding the crash of Prigozhin's plane.
  • The VCHK-OGPU Telegram channel, which is also affiliated with the Wagner Group, reported that the bodies of Prigozhin and his deputy Utkin had been found and identified, and Grey Zone added that "Prigozhin died as a result of the actions of traitors to Russia".
  • The Russian Federal Air Transport Agency posted a full list of the passengers on the plane that crashed in Russia’s Tver Oblast on the evening of 23 August. Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of the Wagner Private Military Company, is on the list.
