SBU: ‘Vostok’ Militant Group Fighter Arrested in Ternopil Oblast in Western Ukraine

Officers of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) arrested a militant of the ‘Vostok’ terrorist group of the so-called Donetsk People’s Republic, the SBU press service reported on August 16.

It has been established that the Donetsk region native voluntarily joined the illegal armed group in August 2014. After corresponding training, he started serving a senior mortar gunner of the Nona artillery system at Vostok special special brigade, where he stayed until March 2016.

SBU officers claim to have evidence that he participated in mortar shelling of the positions of the Ukrainian army near Donetsk international airport and towns of Khartsyzsk, Makiyivka, Snizhne.

"In late spring, the militant realized that the ‘young republic’ had no prospects and who was fearing for his life, returned to government-controlled territories. He was hiding in several oblasts of Ukraine and tried to find a job."

The man’s last job was a gateman at a company in Ternopil oblast. He was arrested at his workplace. The pretrial investigation is underway.
