Zelenskyy appoints Konstantyn Humeniuk as Commander of Ukraine’s Medical Forces

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed a decree appointing Konstantyn Humeniuk as Commander of the Medical Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Quote: "Humeniuk Konstantyn Vitaliiovych shall be appointed as Commander of the Medical Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine."

Details: In a previous decree, the president dismissed Anatolii Kazmirchuk from this position.

For reference: Konstantyn Humeniuk is a colonel in the medical service and an educator, and holds the academic degrees of Candidate of Medical Sciences and Doctor of Medical Sciences. He holds is an Honoured Doctor of Ukraine and is a recipient of the Borys Paton National Prize of Ukraine.

In May 2014, he served in the . In 2017, he became Chief Surgeon of the ATO, and from 2018 to 2019, he served as Chief Surgeon of the Joint Forces Operation. He has held the post of Chief Surgeon of the Armed Forces of Ukraine since 2019.

In May 2022, at a military mobile hospital in a frontline town near Bakhmut, he performed Ukraine's first advanced laparoscopic operation to remove a kidney on a patient suffering severe gunshot damage to the organ.

Background:

  • Commander-in-Chief Mykhailo Drapatyi submitted a proposal to dismiss incumbent Medical Forces Commander Anatolii Kazmirchuk on 4 August.
  • Anatolii Kazmirchuk holds the rank of major general of the medical service. He is a military physician, Doctor of Medical Sciences and professor. He was appointed Commander of the Medical Forces on 19 November 2023 by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
  • In 2024, Anton Shevchuk – head of the medical service of the 82nd Separate Air Assault Brigade, who in July 2023 discovered Chinese-made tourniquets in his brigade and requested that the Medical Forces Command replace them – was reassigned to a lower position in another unit following a formal reprimand from his superiors.
