Zakharova warned that the new transfer of arms to Ukraine would cause serious damage to Russia's relationships with both the US and Türkiye.

Attempts by the US and Türkiye to use peacemaking rhetoric while simultaneously supplying weapons to Ukraine are inevitably "undermining mutual trust", Zakharova complained.

Background:

  • On 8 August it was reported that Ukraine has purchased 70 M39 ATACMS ballistic missiles from Türkiye, along with 12 M270 multiple-launch rocket systems capable of firing GMLRS and ATACMS missiles, as well as tens of thousands of cluster munitions.
  • Deliveries are reportedly expected to begin immediately upon completion of the legally mandated 15-day congressional review period. The State Department submitted the relevant documents to lawmakers on 3 August.
  • The State Department informed Congress that it is prepared to approve the transfer, as it aligns with US security assistance objectives.
