Details: Dmitriev was answering the question of whether there were any security guarantees for Ukraine that Russia could accept.
"I think Ukraine joining NATO, as our president said, is not at all possible. And that, I think, has been widely accepted, including by the Trump administration," Dmitriev said. [Ukrainska Pravda does not refer to Putin as Russian president – ed.]
Dmitriev also added that "some security guarantees in some form may be acceptable".
He stated that Vladimir Putin wanted "a permanent peace in Ukraine" and that he had publicly voiced "some conditions" for it.
The Russian envoy was also asked whether Russia would go on to aggress against other states if a peace agreement on Ukraine was reached.
"There are lots of false and fake narratives circulating, such as Russia possibly going into Europe. That is just a crazy idea. And the problem is there are lots of crazy people, and they discuss it together, so it becomes like ‘group crazy’[...] I think President Trump is very realistic; he knows it’s not going to happen," he replied.
Background:
- In the same interview, Dmitriev accused Ukraine of violating the energy ceasefire and stated that Russia was not asking the United States to lift sanctions as part of the negotiations to end the war.
- Dmitriev is in Washington for talks with the US administration on establishing a dialogue between the US and Russia, and the US has lifted sanctions on him for his visit.
