Details: In the interview, the president expressed regret that Russian narratives are prevailing in the United States and that some people still believe that the Russians are not the aggressor and did not start the war.
"It's a shift in tone, a shift in reality, really yes, a shift in reality, and I don't want to engage in the altered reality that is being presented to me," Zelenskyy said.
He stated that Ukraine did not attack anyone to start the war and proceeded to criticise US Vice President Vance.
Quote: "It seems to me that the vice president is somehow justifying Putin's actions. I tried to explain, ‘You can't look for something in the middle. There is an aggressor and there is a victim. The Russians are the aggressor, and we are the victim’."
Background:
- In the interview, Zelenskyy also urged his American counterpart Donald Trump to visit Ukraine to better understand the destruction caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
- During a spat at the White House on 28 February, Zelenskyy called on Vance to visit Ukraine to witness the situation firsthand. In response, Vance claimed that he "watched stories" and is therefore aware of developments in Ukraine.
- Vance also stated that he refuses to visit Ukraine because he believes the Ukrainian government organises "propaganda tours".
- In March, Zelenskyy reaffirmed his invitation for Vance to visit Ukraine.
