US President Donald Trump has criticised CBS and its 60 Minutes programme after it aired stories about Ukraine and Greenland, saying the broadcaster should pay a heavy price for "going after him".

Details: On his TruthSocial social media platform, Trump said that almost every week, 60 Minutes mentions the name Trump in a "derogatory and defamatory" way, but that this weekend's "broadcast" surpassed them all.

He called on Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr to impose maximum fines and penalties "for their unlawful and illegal behaviour".

On Sunday, the channel aired an interview with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in which he invited Trump to visit Ukraine to see what Russia had done.

Also on the same day, correspondent Jon Wertheim reported from Greenland that some people in the country are talking about Trump's desire to take power into his own hands.

In a post on social media, Trump said that 60 Minutes is no longer a news show but "a dishonest Political Operative simply disguised as ‘News,’ and must be responsible for what they have done, and are doing".

As the AP pointed out once again, Trump filed a US$20 billion lawsuit against 60 Minutes for the way it edited an interview with former Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris last autumn.

Background:

  • This is not the only time Trump has complained about the media. For example, on 24 January, the US Department of the Interior issued an order to change several geographical names, including the Gulf of Mexico, which was renamed the Gulf of America.
  • In February, the White House denied Associated Press journalists access to the Oval Office and the presidential flight of Air Force One because they refused to use the name the Gulf of America.
  • At the end of February, the Associated Press filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration for excluding them from presidential events.
  • On 9 April, a federal judge ordered the White House to restore AP's participation in the presidential events for journalists.
