Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who has publicly expressed support for Donald Trump, actually harbours serious concerns about the behaviour of the US president, Bloomberg sources report.

Details: Meloni and her team are deeply concerned about Trump's behaviour, According to Italian officials who spoke on condition of anonymity. She avoids public criticism of the US president, and everything she says about trade or promoting peace in Ukraine is carefully designed to avoid antagonising the White House.

Nonetheless, Italian automakers such as Stellantis will be affected by US tariffs, and supercar producer Ferrari has announced price increases for select models in the US.

Meloni positions herself as a key player both in the EU and in relations with the US. Hosting last year’s G7 summit demonstrated her ability to bridge political divides in an era of increasing fragmentation, as leaders from various countries sought to engage with her.

Meloni had hoped that engaging with Donald Trump would strengthen her position at the heart of European politics. She was the only EU leader to attend Trump’s inauguration in January. She also met with the president at Mar-a-Lago, maintained close ties with Elon Musk, and stated that she expects a visit to the White House.

After nearly two and a half years in office, her coalition is facing its most serious public criticism. The EU’s demand for concrete commitments on defence spending and support for Ukraine has highlighted the financial constraints that have long plagued Italian leaders.

Meanwhile, the rift in transatlantic relations means that instead of building bridges, Meloni will likely have to take a side.

She insists this is not the case. However, sticking to her course threatens to diminish her international influence, creating pressure on her government, Bloomberg says.
