At the same time, some sources said he was becoming increasingly irritated by the continued missile and drone attacks.

"He will get frustrated if they [Ukraine and Russia] keep bombing infrastructure, infrastructure and energy," said one person close to the administration.

The Telegraph also quoted a person it described as "closest to the president", who claimed the White House is remaining calm and advising people to "trust the process".

Background:

  • On the night of 23-24 March alone, the Russians attacked Ukraine with 99 Shahed-type strike drones and various decoy UAVs. A total of 93 drones failed to reach their targets. The Russian attack affected Kyiv, Kharkiv, Sumy, Kirovohrad and Zaporizhzhia oblasts.
  • Trump and Putin spoke on the phone for more than two hours on 18 March. Trump later stated that they had agreed on an immediate ceasefire concerning all energy and infrastructure facilities.
  • On 23 March, US and Ukrainian delegations held talks in Riyadh. Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated beforehand that the meeting would "determine the parameters of the proposals for various ceasefire regimes currently under discussion".
  • Following the talks, Ukraine’s Defence Minister Rustem Umierov said the discussion with the US delegation in Saudi Arabia had been "productive and focused", without providing further details.
