US President Donald Trump’s Special Envoy for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg, has stated that Ukrainian and Russian delegates may sit in separate rooms during peace talks in Saudi Arabia, with the US delegation moving between them.

Details: Kellogg said that the US delegation at the Saudi talks will include some of his own staff along with teams for National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and Policy Planning Director Michael Anton from the State Department.

"They’re going to be proximity discussions, meaning one group is going to be in this room, one group in this room, and they [American representatives - ed.] will sit and talk, go back and forth, sort of like shuttle diplomacy in a hotel," Kellogg said.

A Sky News source within the Ukrainian government gave a similar account of the planned talks in Saudi Arabia.

Quote: "In general, the concept of the Americans is that they are talking with Russians and they are talking with Ukrainians simultaneously, in different rooms and would kind of walk between meetings/rooms."

More details: The official added that the final format of the talks has not been confirmed, but direct negotiations between the Ukrainians and Russians are not planned.

Background:

  • The White House earlier announced that a new round of negotiations on a peace settlement in Ukraine will take place in Saudi Arabia on 23 March.
  • Russia will be represented by Senator Grigory Karasin and Sergei Beseda, an adviser to the director of the Federal Security Service (FSB) who previously oversaw intelligence gathering on Ukraine.
