Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that his US counterpart, Donald Trump, has not brought up the issue of Russian-occupied Crimea in their discussions.

Details: Zelenskyy’s remarks came in response to a journalist's question regarding media reports suggesting that Trump is considering recognising occupied Crimea as Russian territory as part of a potential peace deal.

Quote: "Trump has not raised this issue [Crimea – ed.] in talks with me. We talked about Crimea back in September in New York. He was interested in why Ukrainians love Crimea so much because he had heard about it."

More details: The Ukrainian president noted that he told Trump in that conversation that Crimea is an inseparable part of Ukraine.

Background:

  • It is worth noting that Zelenskyy recently acknowledged that territorial issues will be on the table in future peace negotiations to end the war.
  • Meanwhile, US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz suggested that a future agreement to end Russia’s war against Ukraine could involve Ukraine ceding territories in exchange for "future security guarantees".
