Moldovan PM: Crisis in Transnistria is Kremlin attempt to put pressure on Ukraine
Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean believes the current energy and humanitarian crisis in the breakaway region of Transnistria is being orchestrated by Russian authorities to exert pressure on Ukraine.
Source: Recean during a crisis briefing in Chișinău on Saturday, 6 January, as reported by a European Pravda correspondent
Details: Recean began his address by thanking Ukraine and its armed forces for protecting Moldova and Europe. He emphasised that the current energy crisis in Transnistria has been artificially created, pointing out that the region’s de facto authorities have shown no interest in receiving support despite the worsening situation.
Quote: "Chișinău offered assistance, but the offer was rejected because Russia needs an artificially created humanitarian crisis… Russia controls Transnistria, and they don’t let anyone help the region."
More details: Recean elaborated on previous government statements identifying the energy crisis as part of Russia's broader strategy.
Quote: "Russia's goal is to create instability in the region and, most importantly, to influence the elections in Moldova scheduled for autumn. Their aim is to secure a pro-Russian government, which would ultimately help them consolidate their military presence [illegally stationed in Moldova – ed.] and later use this leverage, including against Ukraine."
Background: Earlier, Dorin Recean outlined a scenario for the reintegration of Transnistria into the rest of Moldova.
