Details: Speaking at a press conference in Ottawa, Trudeau highlighted his government’s achievements, including support for Ukraine, but acknowledged divisions within his party over its future direction.
Quote: "I intend to resign as party leader, as prime minister, after the party selects its next leader through a robust nationwide competitive process."
More details: Trudeau will continue serving as head of the Canadian government until his successor is chosen.
The prime minister also announced that upon his request, Governor General Mary Simon, the representative of the British monarch in Canada, has agreed to prorogue the Parliament until 24 March.
The prorogation is needed to present a revised government agenda. It is possible that the Liberal Party will find a replacement for Trudeau, who would also lead the government.
Meanwhile, the Canadian opposition is already calling for snap parliamentary elections to form a stable government capable of cooperating with US President-elect Donald Trump’s administration over the next four years.
Background: In December, Canada’s Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Chrystia Freeland, who has Ukrainian heritage, unexpectedly resigned due to disagreements with Trudeau.
