Živković had been fighting for Russia against Ukraine since 2014 as the leader of a Serbian nationalist paramilitary organisation, the Chetniks.

In 2017, he was expelled from Romania by court order for espionage after taking photos of military radar positions on the Black Sea coast and providing their GPS coordinates to Russian contacts.

A year later, he was incarcerated in Serbia on grounds of participating in military operations for a foreign state, but he was later released.
