Countrywide strike demanding new elections is announced in Georgia
In Georgia, where the political crisis rumbles on, people are being urged to join in a countrywide warning strike on 15 January to call for new elections and the release of arrested protesters.
Source: Protest 24, which is spreading information about the planned strike, as reported by European Pravda
Details: The strike will begin on 15 January at 15:00. Starting then, employers and their employees throughout Georgia will not work for three hours.
Quote: "We will temporarily close the doors and stay outside for three hours. Our strike will demonstrate what awaits us in isolation: a stagnant economy, businesses closing down, poverty and unemployment… No matter where you work, whether you are a business owner, manager or employee, please join us."
More details: The striking workers are calling for new parliamentary elections and the release of detained protesters.
For reference: Georgia has been engulfed in a political crisis since October's parliamentary elections, with opposition forces refusing to recognise the election results. This has been further exacerbated by the inauguration of "president" Mikheil Kavelashvili and the government's rejection of European integration.
Background: The Baltic states, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, Norway and Finland have urged the Georgian authorities to end the violence against the protesters and consider holding new elections.
