Slovak operator vows to keep supplying electricity to Ukraine despite Slovak PM's threats

Slovak electricity grid operator SEPS has emphasised that electricity exports to Ukraine will not be cut off despite threats made by Prime Minister Roberto Fico.

Details: SEPS told the Czech news agency CTK on Friday, 3 January, that electricity supplies to Ukraine would not be interrupted and that it would honour the contracts made with Ukrenergo, Ukraine’s state-owned electricity transmission operator.

- Slovakia stressed that it would consider retaliatory measures against Ukraine, such as cutting off backup electricity supplies, in response to the cessation of Russian gas transit in 2025. As expected, Kyiv ceased transiting Russian gas to Slovakia on 1 January.
- Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico sent a letter to European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, reiterating his complaints about Ukraine's refusal to continue transiting Russian gas after 2024.
