Portugal monitors 5 Russian warships off its coast
For several days now, the Portuguese Navy has been monitoring five Russian warships that have been or are passing near the country's coast.

Details: The Portuguese Navy has been escorting five Russian vessels since 31 December. The warships in question are the landing ship Alexander Shabalin, the logistics support vessels Baltic Leader, Sparta II and General Skobelev, which are currently in the Mediterranean, and the Novorossiysk submarine, which is moving along the country's exclusive economic zone.
This effort marked the 73rd monitoring mission conducted by the Portuguese Navy in 2024.
"The Navy's monitoring and surveillance activities guarantee the safety and security of the maritime space, which is subject to our national sovereignty, jurisdiction and responsibility. This helps to protect Portugal's interests and its critical infrastructure while ensuring compliance with our international commitments under the North Atlantic Alliance," the Portuguese Navy said in a statement.
