Italy’s Defence Minister Guido Crosetto has stated that there is no straightforward solution to Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Details: During his speech, Crosetto emphasised the need to continue supporting Ukraine to create the necessary conditions for a ceasefire.

Quote: "No simple or immediate solution has emerged. There has been a significant increase in Russian attacks that indiscriminately hit military and civilian targets in Ukraine."

More details: He noted that the Italian government aims "to provide support to Ukraine in order to finally create the conditions for a ceasefire and to open a necessary diplomatic discussion to reach a long-lasting peace".

Background:

  • Recently, French President Emmanuel Macron warned that Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine will not end "tomorrow or the day after tomorrow", despite US President Donald Trump’s promises to resolve it quickly.
  • On the first day of his second term as US president, Trump said that Ukraine’s president is ready to make a deal and highlighted that Russia is facing significant challenges that should encourage Putin to negotiate.
